Chapter Sixteen

Fishing For The Truth

The decision to skip her morning run so that she could work preyed on her mind as Kinsley checked her email to ensure there weren’t any project emergencies while she waited for her friends to arrive. Being back in Harlow for an extended time had stirred up distractions, and she was going to have to hire help. Falling behind was not an option after all she had put into building her company. She quickly typed up an email to her lawyer, Bill Schneider, asking him to set aside some time to talk later in the day.

Dusty and Gabby hollered as they walked in. “Girl, you work too much,” Dusty drawled as they joined her in the dining room.

“I can’t be away too long. I assign projects to my team, and I’ve got to keep things moving along.” Kinsley shut down her computer. “Ready?”

“Ready as I’m gonna get,” Gabby said. “Where are we going?”

“The cottonwood by Grandpa’s land.” The remote location was Kinsley’s favorite place to relax.

As they left the house, they were met by TJ Smith who had just stepped up onto the porch. Kinsley hadn’t seen him in years. His father, Ted, farmed land close to her grandfather’s and was an old family friend. Since she’d been back, Ted had called and offered to help with a few farming tasks.

“Hey, TJ. We’re going fishing. Do you want to come?” Kinsley asked.

TJ shook his head. “Naw, just droppin’ off bills from Dad.” He held out some papers. As soon as Kinsley took them, he stalked back to his father’s Dodge and drove away.

“He always seems so lonely.” Gabby voiced what they were all feeling. “It’s too bad.”

They piled into Grandpa’s ’69 Chevy pickup, and Kinsley drove them out into the country. They parked in the shade of a massive cottonwood tree alongside a small stream. Dusty helped Gabby out of the cab. “Nice spot, Kins, but isn’t this private land? Should we be here?”

“I have permission. Grandpa used to bring me here arrowhead hunting.”

As they strolled along the edge of the river, Dusty stopped and pushed around the dirt with the toe of his boot. He bent down, picked up a perfect black arrowhead, and held it up proudly. After a chivalrous bow, he placed the find in Gabby’s open palm. Kinsley watched the two of them; it was hard to believe they had never dated. It seemed their mutual attraction was obvious to everybody but them.

“Good eyes, Dusty, but watch yourself. I’m an excellent hunter.” Kinsley sat her tackle box on the ground. “Let’s fish.”

Gabby spread out a blanket, and they all picked a spot to sit. “Hey, Kins, I want to talk to you about your grandpa. Would that be all right with you?” she asked.

Kinsley nodded, and her friend shared the information she had given to Lincoln. “I’ve been thinking since then. You don’t suppose Skelly would kill your grandpa, do you?”

“I’ve considered it, yes. Do you know something?”

“I know Skelly is buying
